902 Standardized Testing and Review Strategies

1 semester, ½ credit

Open to juniors and seniors

This course is designed to supplement the student’s core curriculum. Students will spend one quarter focusing on math/science concepts and one quarter reviewing reading/English concepts. The math/science portion will focus on practice problems similar to those seen on the ACT. It will also emphasize problems requiring higher level reasoning skills, rather than just recall. The reading/English portion is designed to improve reading speed/comprehension, promote critical reading techniques, and build vocabulary. This class may improve marketability to colleges, and scholarship opportunities.

Skills

By the completion of this course, students will be able to...

  1. Solve problems similar to those seen on the ACT.
  2. Use test-taking strategies to improve ACT performance.
  3. Read and interpret scientific data.
  4. Use concepts from algebra, geometry,and trigonometry to solve problems.
  5. Improve grammar, word usage, punctuation, and sentence structure.
  6. Improve reading comprehension.

 

Knowledge

By the completion of this course, students will know...

  1. Basic math skills required for the ACT, including concepts from algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  2. Scientific data analysis, including analysis of experimental design, graphs, and tables
  3. English usage and mechanics, including punctuation, grammar, word usage, and sentence structure
  4. Rhetorical skills
  5. Test-taking tips and strategies to improve performance on all ACT sections
