611 Jazz Band

1.5 semesters, ¾ credit

Open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors

This course may be taken as an elective for students that play the following instruments: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drums, guitar, bass, or piano.  Jazz band students will play music from a variety of music styles.  In addition to learning different music styles, students will learn jazz scales and improvisation.  This class meets from 7:05 to 7:55 am from November through early May. 



By the completion of this course, student will be able to...

  1. Perform music of different styles.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to improvise melodies.
  3. Play multiple blues and jazz scales.
  4. Play common jazz rhythms.
  5. Evaluate musical performances and correct mistakes.
  6. Play in small combo groups.
  7. Perform multiple gigs for large audiences.



By the completion of this course, students will know...

  1. Characteristics of different jazz and rock styles
  2. The different time periods associated with jazz styles
  3. How to read and notate jazz music
  4. How to notate blues and jazz scales
  5. How to compose jazz chords
