609 Concert Band

1.5 semesters, ¾ credit

Open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors

Prerequisite: At least 2 years of elementary or junior high school band or instructor consent.

Concert band begins second quarter, following the completion of all marching band activities. The concert band participates in the Archdiocesan Band Festival and competes in district competitions and festivals. Performances also include a Christmas Concert and a Spring Concert. Attendance at all scheduled events is required during school hours or outside school hours. Active parental involvement in the Music Association is helpful.

Co-requisite: Students enrolled in 609 Concert Band must also enroll in 701 PE/Health, which is only offered during the first quarter of each year, to receive ¼ credit in PE.

Note: Four years of participating in this option earns 3.0 Fine Arts credits, as well as the 1.0 PE/Health credit required for graduation.

  2. Perform music using good intonation.
  3. Perform music using correct dynamics and articulations.
  4. Perform music playing correct rhythms.
  5. Perform music with proper phrasing, style, and articulation.

  2. The different types of articulations and dynamics
  3. How to read complex musical passages
  4. How to explain proper playing techniques
  5. How to complete simple repairs on their instruments
