Nurse

From the Nurse’s Desk:

This year many schools are participating in a Wellness program designed to promote healthy lifestyles. Here at Borgia we would like to also encourage healthy eating and would like to add a “Healthy Recipe” section to every publication of the Borgia Newsletter. With this in mind I would like for the families of Borgia students to participate by submitting a healthy recipe to me. I will then choose one to be published every month. I feel this could be a fun, tasty and healthy project for all of us as hopefully we will have numerous recipes to choose from and try. So, let’s get out those healthy recipes we all enjoy and share them, so others may enjoy them as well. You may send your recipes with your child to school, mail them to the school to my attention or e-mail me at nurse@borgia.com.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation with this project.

Just a reminder:

It is the policy of SFBRHS (as stated in the Student Handbook) that prescription medicine should not be carried by the student. Persons trained to dispense medications are in the resource room and main office and medications should be given to one of them in their original container with specific directions for dispensing. Some over the counter medications (i.e. antibiotic ointment, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough drops, Tums, etc.) can be given if the parent has signed the Over the Counter (OTC) Medication Permission Slip.

Request and Release Self-Administration of Medication by the Student” form needs to be completed by the physician and the parent and must be kept on file in the main office if your child:

  • Carries an Inhaler
  • Has an Insulin Pump
  • Carries an Epipen
  • Takes any Prescription Medication on a regular basis

“Parental Consent for Medication Administration to their child/Physician Consent for Medication Administration” form needs to be completed by the parent and physician (this is a two part form) and kept on file in the main office if your child:

  • takes any medication (prescription or OTC) on a regular basis
  • takes any medication on a as needed basis

Narcotic Medications are not to be brought to the school by a student at any time. If your student needs to take a narcotic medication it must:

  • Come with a doctor’s order giving specific instructions as to when and how it is to be taken
  • Be brought to the school in its original prescription container by the parent
  • Be kept in a locked cabinet in the office
  • Picked up by a parent if the medication is to be brought back and forth between school and home
  • Only empty bottles may be sent home with the student

“Health Inventory” form needs to be signed by the parent prior to any OTC medication (Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc) being administered to the student by the Nurse or office staff. If the form is not on file a parent will be contacted prior to administering any medication. The “Health Inventory” form serves many purposes including: notifying the appropriate staff of any health conditions the staff should need to be aware of, tally information for the state to ensure ALL students have access to medical care, and to enable staff to give OTC medications should the need arise.

All of the forms are available in the main office and need to be completed yearly and updated as changes occur to ensure the safety of your student while they are here at school.

If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to call or e-mail me at the school

Sincerely,

Karen Jasper, LPN
